On December 26, 1991 the Republic of Hungary recognized the independence of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

Diplomatic relations between the two countries were established on April 27, 1991.

On July 23, 2021 Mr. Tahir Taghizade was appointed as an Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Azerbaijan to Hungary and on November 17, 2021 presented his credentials to H. E. Mr. Janos Ader, the former President of the Republic of Hungary.

The Embassy of Hungary in the Republic of Azerbaijan started its activity on January 12, 2009.

On September 19, 2022 the current Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Hungary to Azerbaijan Mr. Tamas Torma presented his credentials to H. E. Mr. Ilham Aliyev, the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
